How to Get Your Dog to Focus on You

Many people have difficulties with their dogs not paying attention to them and getting distracted by other things. This can be a complicated problem, but you can work on it. There are some ways! Here are some tips for ensuring your pup is tuned in to you and not feeling like they're missing out on anything by giving them your complete attention.

Why Does My Dog not Give Me Attention?

Dogs are very social animals, and in the pack, it is important to pay attention to your leader. If you're not showing your dog that you're the leader, there's a strong chance that they will feel like they need to take matters into their paws. This includes paying more attention to what's going on in the outside world than they do to you

How Do I Get My Dog to Focus on Me When Walking?

The walk is a great time to help your dog learn to pay attention. When you're walking your dog, take the opportunity to teach them that they need to focus on you and ignore everything else around them.

For example, have your dog sit or lay down before putting the leash on. Then start to walk and only reward them with treats when they pay attention to you! This means not sniffing everything in sight, no looking at squirrels, and definitely no barking at other dogs

To make this technique as effective as possible, schedule training sessions before your dog eats. If they are hungry, those treats will be irresistible, and they quickly learn that the only way to get them is to behave as you expect them to.

What Can I Do When My Dog is Distracted by Other Things?

If your dog is paying more attention to something else other than you, there are a few things that you can do to get their focus back.  One is to make a loud noise, such as clapping your hands or shaking a can of pennies. This will startle your dog and get their attention back on you.

Another option is to move closer to them and get their attention. If they're focused on something else, chances are they won't be able to resist coming back to you and checking in.

Ways to Increase Your Dog's Attention Span

You can do some things to help your dog focus on you for longer periods of time. One is to keep training sessions short but frequent. If you keep them short, your dog won't get bored, and they will be more likely to pay attention.

Another thing you can do is vary the types of activities around your dog. This way, they will be less prone to get bored and start looking for something else to do.

Finally, make sure that you always provide positive reinforcement when your dog is paying attention to you. This could be with treats, petting, or verbal praise. If they know that they're doing a good job, they're more likely to continue doing so!
