How to Teach a Dog to Sit?

Ergonomics plays a vital role in teaching a dog the sit command. How? Here is a simple answer: As the dog sits, he naturally focuses on your face and eyes. If you can maintain eye contact through hand signals and verbal instructions, then your dog will remain focused. This is because dogs learn that they won't be praised or rewarded until they understand what is expected of them.

When teaching a new command such as sit, place a treat in front of your dog's nose and slowly move it up over his head until his bottom drops to the floor. As soon as he is sitting, immediately mark it with some sort of auditory signal (such as a word or a click from the clicker), then give him a treat, and praise him enthusiastically.

By doing this technique, your dog will learn that sitting is the behavior you want. It is therefore important to keep in mind that it will take time, patience, and consistency. Always remember to praise your dog when he successfully sits.
