Should I Use a Prong Collar Forever?

Prong collars are an essential part of any dog training toolkit. They provide a quick and effective way of communicating with your dog, setting up certain expectations in its mind. When the collar comes out, the dog knows it's time to work!

It is definitely the way to go for dogs that are "soft" or easily distracted. Once you've taught your dog that wearing a prong collar is no big deal (which will likely only take a few days), you want to move on to establishing positive behaviors with it.

"When you leave the house, the prong collar goes on. When you get home, the prong collar can come off. If you're going to do a training session, I like to put the prong collar on," Daniel explains.

That's not to say that the prong collar needs to be used in every situation. For example, if you're using luring techniques or there is no issue with focus during a training session, you may opt to not use the collar.

However, prong collars are not designed to be left on all the time. They need to be used in short bursts. If you're unsure of when it's time to use the collar, watch for signs of stress and/or discomfort. If these signs become apparent, you need to take a step back and think about what is going on before using your prong collar. Also, it is a good idea to consult a professional dog trainer to ensure you are using this tool effectively and safely. The ultimate goal is you always want your dog to have a positive experience when wearing their collar!
